The EU Eco-labelling Programme and its Implementation in the Czech Republic

The eco-labelling system valid in the European Union is an international system, which was established pursuant to Council Regulation (EEC) No. 880/92 of 23 March 1992 on a Community Eco-label Award Scheme. In 2000, Regulation (EC) No. 1980/2000 of the European Parliament and of the Council on a revised Community eco-label award scheme was issued.

Czech producers and providers of tourist accommodation services can also be awarded the EU eco-label for their products or services. The body responsible for the implementation of the European eco-labelling programme in the Czech Republic is the Czech Ecolabelling Agency, the guarantor is the Ministry of the Environment.

Similarly to the Czech national programme, the EU eco-labelling scheme is voluntary. The EU eco-label is The Flower.

Accommodation Services

Within the EU eco-labelling scheme, The Flower may also be awarded to services. There are two categories of services where eco-labels are awarded:

• Tourist accommodation services
• Camp site accommodation services

These two categories where The Flower is awarded belong to the most successful categories in the EU eco-labelling scheme. A total of 9 camps from Austria, Germany and Denmark have been awarded the eco-label. In addition, about 50 hotels mainly from Italy, the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Norway, Spain, but also from Hungary and Switzerland are also holders of the label.

Having gained The Flower, the operators of these facilities prove that even as complex a service as a provision of accommodation is, may function in accordance with environmental protection and reduced negative environmental impacts.
